Scribblenauts’ ESRB Summary is a Cabbage-fed Dinosaur Good Time

Posted by georgemcbain on July 10th, 2009

scribblenautslogo22009Hey all, was busy at work and home yesterday, hence no updates. I also have to finish up the editing of the second podcast, but I thought I would chime in with this awesome story. I saw this over on Joystiq yesterday and it automatically made my day so much better. For those that know me, I believe that Scribblenauts will be my personal game-of-the-year, so any news on the game I will usually devour quickly.

It is pretty easy to see why the game is getting an E10+ rating, but the “rating summary” is particularly chuckle-worthy. The ESRB states:

Rating summary:  This is a puzzle game in which players navigate a series of traps, puzzles, and enemies to collect stars scattered throughout the colorful levels. Players have the ability to summon different objects by writing/typing in the word (e.g., bike, spaceship, lion) and watching it come to life. If multiple words are entered in a sequence, different whimsical scenarios can be triggered: a bicycle can be used to jump over a baby; a bulldozer can clear away a shark; and cabbage can be fed to dinosaurs. Players can elect to summon “cartoony” versions of bats, bombs, guns, and flamethrowers. These types of items can be used to destroy objects or even other summoned items (e.g., a club can be used to hit an animal; steak can be attached to a baby to attract lions; rockets can be lobbed at a man). These triggered animations are minimally depicted and are usually accompanied by popping, musical sound effects; bright, star-shaped flashes; or small puffs of smoke. If players wish to, they may type in the word vomit, which causes a beige-colored lump to appear on the screen.

AWESOME! to say the least.

Battlefield 1943 Storms Onto Xbox Live Arcade

Posted by georgemcbain on July 8th, 2009

battlefield_1943

I almost forgot, but today is the day that Battlefield 1943 makes its way onto the Xbox Live Arcade. At first, I was a little hesitant, but after reading 1up.com and Team Xbox’s reviews, I decided to grab some space bucks and make the purchase. The game is set in my download queue, so once I get home, I will fire up the Xbox and probably pop in Push from Netflix waiting for it to finish. I also have to finish editing down the second Unfathomable Podcast.

If anyone wants to join me, you can find me on XBL with the gamertag George McBain (see also link to the left). Hope to snipe you … I mean, see you. Cheers!

Movies That Make You Scratch Your Head: Baywatch Heading to Big Screen

Posted by georgemcbain on July 7th, 2009

Baywatch

Movies That Make You Scratch Your Head is a movie column here at the Unfathomable that makes you do just that; makes you scratch your head and say “what the … ?”

When the hell did they decide to make a Baywatch movie with intentions of getting it onto the big screens? The Wiki has a little information, stating that back in 2004, Jessica Simpson had signed on to play C.J. Parker (Pam Anderson’s character), but the movie never saw the light of day. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said about other Simpson movies.

Now, Variety today is reporting that Jeremy Garelick is working on a rewrite of Baywatch that he will be directing. Read the rest of this entry »

Prizes Start for 1 vs 100, Still in Beta

Posted by georgemcbain on July 6th, 2009

1vs100_logo

On a recent beta episode of 1 vs 100 on XBLA, virtual host Chris Cashman made mention that starting July 10 in the US, the mob participants will be eligible for “skill-based” prizes. However, the game is still in it’s beta stages, which is expanding to the UK, Germany, and France on the 12th. While it is nice that some prizes are starting to make their way to the contestants, I am still going to opt out for the game for now until regular prizes state. I enjoyed the time I played the beta, but don’t have the time right now until the first “real” season begins. Perhaps I will check in some time after the 10th, though.

thumbs_up

And it is back from the dead, the Unfathomable Mini-Cast! … QUICK, SHOOT IT IN THE HEAD! But all joking aside, I have decided to do some audio recording again and hope to get past one episode this time. I am looking to do one of these every 3-4 days.

In this inaugural entry, I discuss my time in Fallout 3, the possibility of World of Warcraft’s new expansion, Guillermo Del Toro’s new book The Strain, and Oscar/Academy Award changes.

For links to the audio, as well as ways to contact me, read on. Read the rest of this entry »

Wee Bit of Humor: Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes in Fanboys

Posted by georgemcbain on July 2nd, 2009

What I tell you, sweet and womanly, am I right?

I swear that guy with Mewes was Kinky Kelly’s handler in Clerks 2.

Cataclysm: World of Warcraft’s New Expansion?

Posted by georgemcbain on July 1st, 2009

An interesting little story has popped up over at WoW.com about Blizzard (Activision-Blizzard?) filing for a copyright trademark for “The Cataclysm”.

You can go to the link to read the full story and then come back for my little, nobody analysis. Read the rest of this entry »

Oscar Changes Best Picture, Best Song Categories

Posted by georgemcbain on July 1st, 2009

Last week was an interesting one of the Academy Awards, wherein some major changes were introduced. The first bombshell was that the list of nominees for the Best Picture category would be expanding from the previous 5 to 10. This move was in order to make Best Picture a “more interesting and less cloistered” category, according to Sid Gaines, president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Science. I find this particularly interesting, since myself (and Variety), have commented that both The Dark Knight and WALL-E should have been in the running this past year. Gaines even almost confirmed this was the case since he said “many titles were mentioned in the post-mortem, including that one [The Dark Knight].”

Best Picture wasn’t the only category that was refined last week, as you will see after the break. Read the rest of this entry »

Movies That Make You Scratch Your Head: Fincher Taking on Facebook Flick

Posted by georgemcbain on June 29th, 2009

David Fincher

Honestly, I am not big on the whole social-networking “thing”. I have pretty much steered clear of MySpace and Facebook while dabbling lightly with Twitter. Mostly it is because I tend to be a private in my personal life and those people that I would want to know everything I do I generally talk with on a daily/weekly basis. However, I do know a number of people really dig the YouTwitFace community (the algamation of YouTube-Twitter-Facebook, thanks to Conan O’Brien).

It came as a surprise that one of my favorite directors, David Fincher, is taking on the tale of Facebook’s rise. Certainly an interesting choice for the man-behind-the-lens for Se7en, The Game, and Fight Club.

More on possible actors attached to the project after the break …
